The Introductction of Carbachol
Carbachol, an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H15ClN2O2, is a white crystalline powder, soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, insoluble in aceton*, ethe* or chloroform.
Carbachol is a synthetic cholinomimetic and has mild anticholinesterase effects. It can act directly on the pupillary sphincter to produce immediate pupil reduction, and at the same time has an anticholinesterase effect, which can maintain the pupil reduction for a longer period of time. It can also prevent the increase of intraocular pressure after IOL implantation, cataract removal and other ophthalmic surgeries. Intraocular permeability is poor. The pupil is rapidly narrowed after eye-dotting, and the effect is similar to that of pilocarpine, but lasts about three times longer.
The Application & Function of Carbachol
Carbachol is indicated for ophthalmic surgery requiring pupil reduction such as IOL implantation, cataract extraction, and corneal transplantation. Eye drops may be used to treat open-angle glaucoma or in patients who are hypersensitive, ineffective, or develop tolerance to burfloxacin alone. Non-ocular preparations may be used for post-surgical abdominal distension, urinary retention and other causes of abnormal gastrointestinal or bladder function, and for relief of dry mouth symptoms.
